In nature, mating successfully can be difficult, so many species have evolved striking adaptations to support reproduction. Some deep-sea dwelling anglerfish have lost the immune genes that distinguish self versus foreign tissue to facilitate full-body fusion during mating. To reduce immune-mediated rejection after tissue transplantation, researchers study these anglerfish genomic adaptations.
