Complex signaling events from the gut to the central nervous system influence brain health and disease.
Crosstalk between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system (CNS) occurs via the gut-brain axis. The enteric nervous system mediates numerous cellular and molecular processes that affect neurological functions. Additionally, molecules derived from resident gut microbes participate in signaling events that alter CNS function through direct pathways and circulating metabolites and immune cells.
