DNA was first extracted in 1869 by Swiss doctor Johann Friedrich Miescher. Since then, numerous improvements in technology and technique have improved the yield and efficiency of DNA extraction protocols. Today, it is possible to extract DNA in minutes within a single storage vessel, and without any toxic chemicals, particle suspensions,  
spin-filter columns, or centrifugation.
