Can HEPAs Filter Out Everything?

HEPA filters remove particulate matter from the air, but can they catch volatile chemicals and DNA?

HEPA filters are the main line of defense against contamination for biological safety cabinets. They capture particles using three methods:

  • Inertial impaction rapidly changes air direction to separate particles from the air stream
  • Interception forces particulate matter to make contact with the filter matter
  • Diffusion occurs when the random motion of particulate matter results in contact with the filter
