Cell culture has been used in life science laboratories for well over a century. Although it has provided scientists with experimental tools and models that have led to tremendous discoveries and advances, researchers are starting to recognize the limitations of traditional two-dimensional monolayer-based cell culture techniques. In light of 2-D cell culture's inability to capture the external cues from the surrounding structure and environment that control cellular behavior in vivo, scientists are exploring, developing, and adopting three-dimensional cell culture systems.
